Channel 9′s ‘Ocoee Massacre’ documentary wins Gracie Award

ORLANDO, Fla. — Channel 9′s “Ocoee Massacre” documentary won a Gracie Award on June 9, The Alliance For Women In Media Foundation said.

The film, which debuted in November, won the award for local television documentary.

The Gracies recognize exemplary programming created by, for and about women in radio, television, cable and interactive media.

The documentary tells the under-told story of the nation’s deadliest Election Day massacre.

An unknown number of people -- both Black and white -- were killed in Ocoee on Nov. 2, 1920.

The events led to the lynching of Julius “July” Perry, who was among Ocoee’s most successful Black businessmen.
