Dean was arrested on Jan. 2 in Fort Lauderdale as he reentered the country from Jamaica, according to a report.

The grand jury has indicted Dean on two counts: first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm and tampering with evidence related to a capital felony.

Investigators said Sheppard and Dean had been in a prior romantic relationship and were staying at the Extended Stay America motel on US 192 in West Melbourne.

Deputies said evidence shows the two shared a rideshare vehicle before the shooting, and Dean returned to the motel alone afterward.

Sheppard’s family said Dean was her former boyfriend and described the relationship as “toxic and violent”.
