Images of Ryan Newman’s terrible crash may conjure up memories of Dale Earnhardt, Sr.'s crash during the Daytona 500 19 years ago.
On Feb. 18, 2001, Earnhardt was killed in a final-lap crash at the Daytona 500 almost exactly 19 years ago. The biggest name in NASCAR hit the wall almost head-on, and died after the impact.
Newman was rushed to the hospital Monday and was listed in serious condition, but with non-life-threatening injuries. Doctors said he is expected to survive.
The crash resulted in an outpouring of support from fans and fellow racers, including Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Eyewitness News anchor Greg Warmoth was there the day Earnhardt crashed and died. The tragedy led to rule changes regarding the safety of drivers, and new safety precautions have been put in place.
