LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Eric Castaneda scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lift Oviedo Hagerty to a 54-44 victory over South Miami in the boys Class 8A state basketball championship game Saturday night.
Hagerty (26-6) won behind strong outside shooting in the second half as the Huskies shot six 3-pointers to rally from a 19-16 halftime deficit.
The teams traded the lead several times in the third period, but Henry Torres' 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Hagerty a 37-34 lead and momentum going into the fourth.
Torres added another 3 and Luke Doyle's fast-break basket extended the Huskies' lead to eight. South Miami (28-4) would get no closer than four as Hagerty salted the game away at the free-throw line.
Logan Hovey scored 15 points for Hagerty while Doyle added 12 points and four assists. South Miami was led by Antravious Simmons, who had six points and 15 rebounds.
