Coronavirus: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tests positive for COVID-19

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, the eve of the Senate’s return following a two-week recess.

Justin Goodman, Schumer’s spokesman, confirmed the diagnosis in a prepared statement, noting that Schumer plans to quarantine and work remotely this week.

Schumer, who is experiencing mild symptoms, is vaccinated and double-boosted against the virus, Goodman stated.

By Sunday evening, cumulative nationwide COVID-19 cases totaled nearly 89 million, including nearly 2.4 million infections diagnosed within the past 28 days. Meanwhile, a total of 1,020,861 U.S. virus-related fatalities have been recorded in the more than two years since the pandemic began, including 9,360 deaths within the past month,according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

Globally, more than 555 million cumulative COVID-19 cases have been detected since early 2020, resulting in nearly 6.4 million fatalities worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins data.
