It happened Sunday night in Tampa, following what police said involved a crime spree committed by the man driving the white Honda seen in the video.

Police used the PIT maneuver to stop the suspect who they said was fleeing from officers.

PIT stands for Precision Immobilization Technique, and is often used by a law enforcement vehicle to stop a fleeing vehicle by striking it and causing it to rotate abruptly.

Investigators said his crime spree started around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, about two hours before they were able to stop him on I-275.

TPD said the suspect, who they have since identified as 48-year-old Jeremiah Bailey, intentionally struck several pedestrians with his car at different locations in the city.

Upon bringing the Honda to a stop, officers are heard on video yelling, “Let me see your hands!” and “He’s reaching!”

A barrage of gunfire can then be heard, followed by officers yelling, “Cease fire!” and “Shots fired!”

In a news conference early Monday, Chief Lee Burcaw said Bailey reached for what officers believed was a weapon as he exited the Honda on the interstate.

That’s when officers opened fire, with numerous shots hitting and killing Bailey, Burcaw said.

The department said the Tampa police officers involved are on administrative leave as Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the incident.

Burcaw also said three of his officers were hurt during the apprehension of Bailey, but are expected to recover.

One pedestrian died in Bailey’s alleged crime spree on Sunday and at least three other citizens were hurt in what police called hit-and-run incidents.

Bercaw said of the aviation and body-worn camera footage released, “This video shows the heroic efforts these Tampa Police Officers took to stop an ongoing and committed threat to our community.”

He added on the tragic series of events involving citizens and their families, “Our thoughts remain with those affected by these heinous acts and our Victim Advocate will work closely with each of them to ensure they are connected with the resources they may need.”
