Sheriff’s reports indicate that a man died in Daytona Beach this weekend

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A man was found unresponsive in the water at Daytona Beach near the Americano Beach Lodge early Saturday afternoon and did not survive despite the efforts of lifeguards.

The incident happened around 12:40 p.m. near the Americano Beach Lodge, close to Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway and Zelda Blvd. Despite the quick response from beach safety personnel, deputies, and firefighters, the man could not be revived.

“The teamwork and the hustle they had just showed the training and the willingness they had to do what they could to try and save his life,” said Daniel Brandenburg, a tourist who witnessed the efforts.

Officials highlight water safety due to storm Erin’s waves and rip currents. Dangerous conditions deterred many and tourists are cautious about swimming.

“It’s treacherous, it can be,” said Rae Pirrello, a tourist, highlighting the risks posed by the current conditions. Beach safety officials remind the public to be aware of rip currents and to swim parallel to the shore if caught in one, a safety tip reiterated by tourists like Rita Epperson.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said the man was found unresponsive in the water. Beach Safety usually handles water rescues, drownings, or medical emergencies, but deputies also respond.

The tragic incident highlights the importance of water safety and underscores the vital role of Beach Safety in emergency responses along Daytona Beach. Due to the dangerous conditions caused by storm Erin, beachgoers are reminded to exercise caution and stay vigilant while enjoying the ocean.
