BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the source of a sticky black substance washing up on some Florida beaches.

Over the weekend, black balls of tar or oil appeared along the coastline in Fort Lauderdale.
The beaches were closed to swimmers after some beachgoers found getting the substance off their feet challenging.

City leaders later reopened the beach.
They say the matter might involve a potential oil spill.

But so far, the source of that oil remains unknown.
