DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Volusia County investigators released body camera footage on Monday showing a deputy-involved shooting that occurred over the weekend in Daytona Beach.
The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday on Derbyshire Road, where deputies found two victims who had been stabbed, aged 16 and 39.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood emphasized the importance of releasing body camera videos to help residents understand the necessity of law enforcement’s actions.
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Landon Watson, charged at a Daytona Beach Sergeant with a knife, prompting officers to shoot him. Sheriff Chitwood mentioned the possibility that the sergeant might have been stabbed, although it is not confirmed if his vest stopped the stab.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young highlighted the importance of coordinated training among agencies to respond to such intense situations effectively.
Watson had been arrested in June for loitering and prowling, during which he expressed a desire to die, indicating potential mental health issues. All officers and deputies involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, which is standard procedure.
Investigators say that the victims are expected to recover from their injuries. The investigation into the shooting continues as law enforcement agencies follow mental health protocols for their personnel.
