Seminole County firefighters begin prescribed burns the help lower risk of wildfires

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Firefighters in Seminole County are preparing for Florida’s fire season with prescribed burns.

WATCH CHANNEL 9 EYEWITNESS NEWS

This is a practice they have been doing since 1999.

It was put in place by the county following massive wildfires that spread across the state in 1998.

Firefighters are aiming to reduce the risk of potential wildfires in our area.

They say prescribed burns reduce the number of dead plants and trees that can fuel a fire.

“So, if we do have a wildfire, um, the intensity of that fire will be minimal or lower,” said Seminole County firefighter Kevin Beavers.

Firefighters say the controlled burns also make our forests healthier.
