President Trump fires new salvo in remote work, return-to-office fight

The battle over where work gets done gained new visibility over the past year.

Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump has fired another shot in the ongoing battle over remote work, requiring federal employees to return to their offices.

The executive order on returning to the office was issued Monday alongside a number of more controversial executive orders seeking to redefine birthright citizenship, delaying the TikTok ban, and opening up areas of the country to oil and gas drilling.

“Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of Government shall, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis, provided that the department and agency heads shall make exemptions they deem necessary,” the executive order said.
