Police: 1 injured, suspect in custody after shooting in New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — One person was injured in a shooting in New Smyrna Beach Thursday morning, according to the police department.

It happened just after 8 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Dixie Freeway near Lytle Ave.

New Smyrna Beach police officers arrived on scene to find the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen area. He was taken to Halifax Hospital and is expected to survive.

Responding officers also made contact with a man identified as 66-year-old Stephen Hammersley. According to the police department, witnesses reported seeing Hammersley and the victim arguing just before the shooting,

Although none of the witnesses said they actually saw the shooting, police noted that the only weapon found at the shooting scene was a semi-automatic handgun that belonged to Hammersley.

Hammersley was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He’s being held in the Vousia County Jail on $10,000 bond.
