PALM BAY, Fla. — Palm Bay police have released more information on a brush fire that prompted a brief evacuation Wednesday afternoon.
Police say the police vehicle unexpectedly caught fire after officers responded to a homeless camp between Onyx Drive NE and the nearby railroad tracks. The reason it caught fire is not yet known.
The fire spread briefly to adjacent brush, and the nearby homes were evacuated. That evacuation was lifted by 4:15 p.m.
Police say no structures were damaged.
The department said the officer involved sustained minor injuries while attempting to extinguish the flames.
This was one of two fires in the Palm bay area Wednesday. Police said the other one was in the southwest corner of Babcock Street and Malabar Road.
