Orlando leaders to start new measures Friday to improve downtown safety

ORLANDO, Fla. — Leaders in Orlando are putting planes into place Friday to improve safety for people going downtown.

City officials plan to start the next phase of reopening Orange Avenue.

The changes were started after two people died when a man started shooting into a crowd on Halloween night.

The goal is to reopen Orange Avenue to two-way traffic eventually, but for now, the focus is on improving pedestrian safety.

After months of frustration from businesses, the city is finally moving forward with its plan to revitalize downtown.

New barriers will be installed on Central Boulevard and Pine Street to guide pedestrians onto sidewalks.

Officials hope the plan to restore two-way traffic to Orange Avenue will create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
