Orange County sheriff looks to increase punishments for speeding and reckless drivers

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies in Orange County are pulling over more drivers who are going over 100 miles per hour.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina told Channel 9 about his plans to ensure speeding and reckless drivers face steeper punishments.

Deputies recently released several videos showing them dealing with speeding drivers in our area.

“When you’re going over 100 miles an hour, you are not going to survive that traffic crash and neither is the person you strike,” Mina said.

Mina said he wants to introduce legislation to hold dangerous speeders accountable.

For a driver going over 100 miles per hour, he wants their first offense to lead to a $2,500 fine; they’ll lose their license for six months, and deputies will impound their vehicle for 30 days.

For a second offense, he wants a $5,000 fine, a year without a license, and the vehicle impounded for 30 days.
