MARION COUNTY, Fla. — An arctic blast brought near freezing temperatures to Ocala Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Cold rain and wind in the overnight hours were a concern for Marion County’s Emergency Operation Center.
Emergency managers partnered with the Salvation Army: Center of Hope to offer up to 80 additional beds for those seeking refuge from the cold.
Meanwhile, Marion County Public Schools announced classes would continue Wednesday, but outdoor afterschool activities would be cancelled on Wednesday and Thursday.

A spokesperson for the district told Channel 9 that staff members were taking extra precautions ahead of the cold weather.
“We’ve got our technicians coming in making sure our heaters are working. They’ve actually been on for the last few weeks,” Kevin Christian, Director of Public Relations for MCPS, said.

“Our bus drivers are coming in early to make sure the buses are nice and warm by the time we pick up the kids,” he added.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office stationed deputies at some county bridges to monitor for possible freeze, though deputies said there were no issues overnight.
