Off-duty Florida jail deputy killed in ‘targeted’ shooting, officials say

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — Law enforcement in South Florida said one of their own has been shot and killed while off-duty.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said a 39-year-old corrections deputy died after a shooting on Monday night.

Deputies said the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. in Belle Glade, near Lake Okeechobee.

Officials have not said what led up to the shooting but called the incident “targeted.”

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The sheriff’s office said the man had worked as a corrections deputy for the last three years.

A ceremonial escort from St. Mary’s Hospital was held overnight to the medical examiner’s office.
