Two additional female victims were at the scene, police said.
One of those victims told police she had been in the vehicle with the other woman when she and the first victim got out to enter the apartment. As they approached the building, two masked men in dark clothing emerged from the rear. The second victim told police that she ran away in fear and heard two gunshots before calling 911.
The third victim, who remained in the back seat of the car, told police she heard screaming before seeing Gates running back to the vehicle with the suspects in pursuit. She said one suspect shot Gates as she tried to open the passenger door. The third victim then ran from the car for safety and heard another gunshot as she ran.

Witnesses told police the suspects fled in a blue four-door hatchback, possibly a Nissan Murano or Rogue, with black wheels and dark tinted windows. Investigators obtained surveillance footage showing the vehicle leaving the scene and heading east on Legends Lane before turning north on Bill France Boulevard.
The victims told police that both suspects were wearing dark clothing and ski masks and stated the taller male pointed a large black colors pistol at them.
