Florida governor, first lady highlight cancer research, innovation funding

MIAMI, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis and his wife, Casey DeSantis, spoke about cancer research at that’s happening at Florida International University.

At a news conference Friday morning, DeSantis highlighted research underway at the university.

The governor, whose wife is a cancer survivor, spoke about the funding the state has dedicated to cancer research in recent years.

The Casey DeSantis Cancer Research Program received more than $127 million in funding this fiscal year.

DeSantis says the state has allocated an additional $60 million to the state’s cancer research program this year.

He also awarded $2 million to biotech startup First Ascent Biomedical. Officials there said the money will be used to combine to integrate technology and artificial intelligence with drug testing to determine induvial patents’ treatment needs.

“This money’s going to be used to bring our individualized cancer treatment approach to patients throughout Florida. This will be children facing cancer, adults facing cancer. Everyone who has failed the standard of needs a new individualized treatment,” said Noah Berlow, chief technology officer for First Ascent Biomedical.
