Avoid letting holiday scammers steal your cheer this season

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — The Bunnell Police Department reminds residents to stay vigilant and protect themselves from becoming victims of fraud due to recent investigations revealing how criminals exploit unsuspecting citizens.

We can ensure the Grinch doesn’t ruin Christmas with awareness and caution. The holiday season is a time for joy and generosity, but it’s also when scammers lurk, ready to steal your holiday cheer

Fraudulent Facebook marketplace transactions, bail bond scams and fake warrant schemes are the most commonly successful.

Here are simple steps to avoid becoming a victim during the holidays. Verify before you pay, be cautious of urgent payment requests,  avoid untraceable payment methods, Sift through cash and protect personal information. 

The Bunnell Police Department gladly assists anyone in determining if someone demanding payment is legitimate. Also, anyone wanting to transact a Facebook Marketplace or similar transaction in our police department’s parking lot under the camera or with an officer present is welcome to do so anytime.

Call us at (386) 313-4911; we’ll be nearby if needed.  If the other person isn’t comfortable meeting at the police station, that’s the red flag you need to know the transaction was likely to cause you a problem.  Cancel the meeting and don’t engage the person any further.

That’s why it’s crucial to stay vigilant, verify information, and act cautiously.” Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon said.
