Investigators determined that the Volkswagen was traveling southbound on OBT, in the center lane, approaching Hunter’s Creek Boulevard.

According to witnesses, the SUV was traveling above the posted speed limit, FHP said.

Investigators said the Mazda was stopped at the intersection ahead at a traffic signal, facing southbound on OBT.

Troopers said the front of the SUV collided with the rear of the sedan.

Both drivers suffered injuries and were taken to Osceola Medical Center, investigators said.

The driver of the Mazda later died. FHP did not release his name, but said he was 55, of Orlando.

The Volkswagen’s driver, 56, of Crowley, TX, suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said.

The crash shut down the busy intersection for hours, but FHP reopened both roads around 6:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
