INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — One deputy died and another was hurt Friday morning in a shooting in Indian River County. A third person was shot and the suspect was also injured by gunfire, according to Sheriff Eric Flowers.
1 p.m. update:
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers released the following details at a noon news conference Friday:
A woman was in the process of evicting her son from a home at Bermuda Club, a gated community near Vero Beach.
Three deputies and a locksmith were in the entryway of the home.
The homeowner’s son, Michael Halberstam, 33, who was facing eviction, went and got a gun from another part of the home, Flowers said.
Halberstam opened fire at struck two deputies, as well as the locksmith, the sheriff said.
The shooting victims included:
- Deputy Terry Mashkow, age 47: Deceased. She served with the IRC Sheriff’s Office for 25 years, having started as a dispatcher
- Deputy Tino Arizpe: Shot in the shoulder; ran into garage after being shot, but will survive
- Locksmith (name not released): Was also shot; at last report, was in surgery and listed in critical condition
Flowers said a third deputy who was on scene, was not hit by gunfire. He fired at the suspect, injuring him.
Halberstam, at last report, was in surgery and in critical condition.
Flowers said the suspect’s criminal history included a 2006 narcotics charge & a 2015 assault (misdemeanor) charge, both out of the state of Virginia.
The sheriff said there have been seven calls to this residence on Governors Way within the past month — almost all made by the suspect’s mother
Flowers also said the suspect was fired from his job at UPS — and had also been posting negative comments on a social media account about the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.
Flowers said investigators are also looking into whether gunfire by Mashkow struck the suspect. He added that Friday’s shooting was only the second line-of-duty death at the Indian River Sheriff’s Office in the past 100 years.
