Democrats projected to win majority in U.S. House of Representatives

The projected win shifts control of the chamber from Republicans to Democrats

WASHINGTON D.C — Democrats are projected to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, ABC News reported Tuesday night.

The network projected that Democrats would win enough seats to secure a majority in the 435-seat chamber. ABC News said its projection accounted for races in states where polls closed later that its analysts determined would not change the outcome.

What does a Democratic House majority mean?

Democrats will be positioned to elect the next House speaker, lead committees and decide which bills come to the floor when the new Congress convenes in January.

Control of the chamber also gives Democrats greater authority to investigate President Donald Trump’s administration during the final two years of his second term.
