ORLANDO, Fla. — A parasitic outbreak that has sickened people across multiple states appears to be slowing down in Central Florida.
New numbers released by the state overnight show just two new cases of cyclospora reported in the area over the past week.
Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Health officials have been tracking an increase in cases for months, with the outbreak linked to contaminated lettuce imported from Mexico.
Nationwide, the CDC has reported about 17,000 cases of cyclospora and two deaths.
While the latest numbers suggest cases are declining locally, health officials continue to urge people to take precautions, including washing fresh produce thoroughly and following food-safety recommendations.
For Central Florida, the latest data offers a sign that the months-long outbreak may finally be slowing.
