Cold weather shelters to expand access in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Homeless Services Network of Central Florida announced Thursday morning that it is expanding access to cold weather shelters in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties.

Here are the current shelter and warming locations mentioned by the group:

Orange County:

• Barnett Park Recreation Center Gym, 4801 W. Colonial Dr., Orlando, 32808

• Goldenrod Recreation Center, 4863 N. Goldenrod Rd., Winter Park, 32792

• Coalition for the Homeless, 18 N. Terry Ave., Orlando, 32801

• The Salvation Army, 624 Lexington Ave., Orlando, 32801

• Orlando Union Rescue Mission Family Home (families, single women, single parents with minor children): 1525 W. Washington St., Orlando, 32805

• Orlando Union Rescue Mission Project Hope (single men): 3300 W. Colonial Dr., Orlando, 32808

• Matthew’s Hope, 611 Business Park Blvd. #101, Winter Garden, 34787

These centers will open for guests at 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and close the following mornings at 9 a.m.

They are pet-friendly, but pets should be housed in crates.

Seminole County:

• Rescue Outreach Mission, 1701 W. 13th St., Sanford, 32771

• If the Mission fills its overflow space, the county will provide additional space, bedding, and meals at a local church that partners with the Mission.

Osceola County:

• First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud, 1000 Ohio Ave., St. Cloud

• Iglesia Del Nazareno Casa De Vida, 2367 Fortune Rd., Kissimmee

These locations are open beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. and will remain open through Friday night.

Hundreds of people are waking up in cold-weather shelters this week across Central Florida.

That includes over 100 adults and six kids at Matthew’s Hope in Winter Garden.

People staying at the shelter said the service greatly impacts the community.

They are grateful to have a place to sleep, hot meals, and a place to shower.

Matthew’s Hope is continuing to house dozens of homeless men, women, and children as cold temperatures sweep through Central Florida.

However, because so many need a warm place to sleep, leaders are continuing to call on local churches and organizations to house people as the cold weather passes.
