‘Mustache and all': Retro ‘Jeopardy!’ episodes, including series premiere, begin this week on Channel 9

“Jeopardy!” is going retro on Channel 9 over the next month.

With the COVID-19 pandemic delaying production of America’s quiz show, “Jeopardy!” is going back to the vault over the next month and re-releasing classic episodes from as early as the 1980s, which is when the show first started.

“What is incredible about “Jeopardy!” is that it has historical importance while remaining culturally relevant today,” executive producer Mike Richards said in a news release. “I know our fans will love the nostalgia while still enjoying the gameplay. A lot has changed over the years – the set, the pace of the game...the mustache! – but the ability to play along is timeless.”

All this week on Channel 9, “Jeopardy!” will air five of its best and most exciting shows from the 1980s, including the series premiere that originally aired Sept. 10, 1984. The first “super-champion,” the first record-setting contestant and more will also re-air.

From July 27-31, “The Best of Celebrity Jeopardy!” will revisit five of the most entertaining celebrity games ever played on the show. More than $9 million has been won for causes by the celebrity contestants.

From Aug. 3-7 and Aug. 10-14, “Jeopardy!” will show an encore presentation of “Million Dollar Masters” from 2002, the first-ever $1 million competition. Fifteen of the best contestants from the first 18 seasons of the show competed in a two-week contest that taped at Radio City Music Hall.

Alex Trebek, who has hosted more than 8,000 episodes, is taping introductions to each show safely from his home. In a video posted on Twitter, he promised that the episodes would include some of the best from the early days, “mustache and all.”

Trebek also updated fans on his ongoing battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

He sat down with Good Morning America to discuss the battle in his upcoming memoir “The Answer Is...: Reflections on My Life,” which will be released Tuesday.

“I’m doing well,” he said. “I’ve been continuing my treatment, and it is paying off, though it does fatigue me a great deal. My numbers are good, I’m feeling great.”
