The 5-year-old attends Porter Elementary School in Syracuse, the Post-Standard reported.

There was no gun found in the child’s backpack, Syracuse Police Department Lt. Matthew Malinowski said Tuesday. The student did not appear to know the items were in the backpack, he told the newspaper.

Malinowski said there were various rounds of what appeared to be ammunition for handguns and rifles, WSTM-TV reported. A razor blade was also found, according to the Post-Standard.

School district officials shared a statement from Syracuse police when asked to comment, according to NBC News.

“There was a 5-year-old student found in possession of a magazine and ammunition that was located in their backpack,” the statement said. “At this time, it appears that the student had no knowledge of the presence of such materials. The investigation is very active and ongoing. There was no gun, just a magazine, and ammunition.”

The incident comes more than a month after a first-grade teacher in Virginia was wounded by a gun allegedly fired by a 6-year-old student.
