Volusia County gives look at system to flag, remove books from school libraries

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Schools across the state must put policy and procedures in place allowing people to flag and potentially remove books from school libraries.

Volusia County Schools gave its first look at its system during a school board meeting Tuesday night, and parents have a lot of questions about the process.

People can flag books and materials in Volusia County Schools’ media centers they feel are inappropriate. Schools will have their own committee of parents, teachers and sometimes students to review complaints.

Parents can also restrict what books their children can check out.

The district said only about five books have been challenged so far and immediately pulled. None have gone through the review process yet.
