Here’s how you can help name a new Central Florida elementary school

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Central Florida school district is asking for the community’s help to name its new elementary school.

Polk County Public Schools is asking for people to vote in a poll before Feb. 20 to help pick the name.

The school, located at 9525 State Highway 653 in Winter Haven, is expected to open in August 2023, and will serve approximately 996 students.

After researching the surrounding area, officials said a naming committee comprised of school, district and community leaders has selected four possible names for the school:

  • Sensabaugh Elementary: Effie Reeve Sensabaugh was a beloved elementary teacher in Winter Haven. Her career ended in 1943 after more than five decades of service - with more than 40 years spent teaching students in Winter Haven.
  • South Pointe Elementary: This option refers to the new school’s location, which is being constructed within the southernmost point of Winter Haven.
  • Osprey Elementary: The osprey is a bird found commonly year-round in Florida, including the area where this new school is being built.
  • Osprey Landing Elementary: The osprey is a bird found commonly year-round in Florida, including the area where this new school is being built.

After voting closes, the winning name will go to the Polk County School Board for consideration at an upcoming meeting.
