Pick Nick: Orange County shelter hosting adoption event for longest resident

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County Animal Services is hosting an event on Saturday to encourage someone to “Pick Nick.”

Nicholas, a 3-year-old, 67-pound pup, has called the shelter home for 95 days, making him the shelter’s longest canine resident.

“During that time he’s become a favorite of our staff and volunteers; he has a sweet demeanor and is a young healthy dog,” said Diane Summers, manager for Orange County Animal Services.

Officials are hoping during the event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday that they can match Nick with the family he deserves.

Nick’s been at the shelter since a resident who found him loose at a nearby intersection brought him to Orange County Animal Services on Dec. 18, 2022. The shelter said Nicholas’ background remains a mystery.

“With him being here for a longer period of time, we’ve had the opportunity to get to know him, his likes and dislikes,” Summers said. “He loves playing with toys, is easily handled and walked, loves treats and is motivated by them to learn. We do believe, based on the reactivity he’s shown to other dogs, he would do best as the only dog in his future home.”

During this Saturday’s “Pick Nick” event, the shelter will be place Nicholas in its front play yard, inviting guests to interact with him directly and with ease. The shelter hosted a similar event, Blue Diamond Day, in May 2022, which led to the adoption of the featured pet.

Nicholas is available for adoption for $55. He has already been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and so is ready to go home with his family right away. More information about the shelter’s adoption process can be found here.
