New affordable housing community for seniors opens in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County leaders celebrated the grand opening of a new affordable housing community on Wednesday.

Hawthorne Park is a new complex on Silver Star and North Pine Hills roads.

It has 120 units and other amenities, specifically for seniors.

County leaders had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday morning. They also talked about the importance of the project.

Wendover Housing Partners said the project was years in the making. The development replaced a portion of an underutilized shopping plaza.

Other projects are in the works to tackle the affordable housing crisis in Orange County.

A recent study found rent prices in Orange County rose about 25% last year.

Orange County commissioners are holding a special work session on Thursday morning to discuss ways to tackle the affordable housing crisis.

One of the ideas is capping rent hikes.

Commissioners have to decide by August if they want to put it on the November ballot.
