Travis Grubs, 36, was the victim of a shooting that happened at 10th Street and Central Avenue near Apopka. It was one of three shootings that happened within hours of each other in Orange County last Monday.

His mother, Tasha Whiting, said he was walking home when someone pulled a gun on him. Deputies have remained quiet about what happened and are still looking for the killer.

“They took my grandson getting to know his own uncle, getting to learn sports from his own goal,” Whiting said.

She described her son as a loving uncle and a big teddy bear who would give the shirt off his back. His mom said he also had multiple arrests in the past, and was schizophrenic bipolar but doesn’t want his mental illness to define him.

Whiting said she doesn’t want Grubs’ mental illness to define him. She hopes instead people realize the hole his absence has left in her and her family’s hearts.

Police are offering up to $5,000 for whoever knows what happened there.

Whiting and Dereck Cummings’ mother, Tawanan Ware, have grown close the past week after both losing their sons to gun violence.

“They messed with the wrong two mothers,” Ware said.
