Hurricane Nicole: Recovery, rebuilding underway in New Smyrna Beach

VOLUISA COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of people are still without in New Smyrna Beach.

The evacuation order has been lifted there, but people are being asked to stay away from the shoreline because some structures are compromised.

People who rode out the storm at home have already started repairs, and rebuilding has begun.

Crews are working to build a temporary sea wall until things get sorted out a day since homes all along the shoreline were thrashed.

“We woke up at 3 in the morning and spent an hour, hour and a half sopping up water as it came through the windows and doors,” resident Scott Blanford said.

He said he and his friends witnessed Nicole’s wrath thrash a hole into the seawall that was protecting their condos.

Recovery teams have a lot of work to do before they can figure out exactly how much of the area was impacted, and how badly.
