How one community is moving to QR codes, technology to help fight homelessness

DeLAND, Fla. — DeLand leaders are hoping to fight homelessness in the city by asking people to pull out their phones instead of their wallet.

The new campaign is in partnership with The Neighborhood Center. Flyers will be set up encouraging people to donate so they can channel the funds to the right place.

The city is launching its “Spare Change for Real Change,” a donation drive will be set up using a QR Code. Donations can also be accessed by texting “Change 4 Homeless” to 44321.

The city will then give the donation to the Neighborhood Center for Homeless Prevention.

The organization is doing other initiatives, like going out into the community with officers for outreach to help more people who are sleeping outside in wooded areas and downtown.
