PALM COAST, Fla. — In the wake of the mass shooting at a Texas elementary school, a Central Florida school board member wants to bring in armed guardians to help protect students and staff.

Flagler County Schools is planning to have a workshop to talk about the idea of having extra armed personnel on its campuses.

The school district is considering using school guardians in addition to the school resource deputies already at schools.

While some believe armed guardians can help, others believe there should be more of a focus on mental health on campus.

Channel 9 was there in 2018 when Volusia County trained its first class of roughly two dozen people to become school guardians.

The program was put into place after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

It allows local sheriff’s offices to train and arm school district employees such as volunteers or teachers to respond to a threat on campus.

Flagler County schools could be next to implement the program.

The state requires guardians to undergo at least 144 hours of training, 132 of which deals with firearms and passing a psychological exam and drug test.
