County waives permit fees to help residents with storm damage repairs

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Along state Route A1A in Volusia County, the level of damage varies but the stories of destruction are the same.

Houses condos and hotels alike are all dealing with Hurricane Nicole’s fury.

Now residents are looking for a quick fix before any more damage occurs.

In an effort to expedite the permit process, county leaders have extended the waving of permit fees to speed up repairs.

The move will mostly affect homeowners, many of who live in Wilbur-By-The-Sea where the worst damage can be seen.

In all, 29 properties have sustained severe damage, with 17 being declared unsafe.

Officials say there are potentially more properties that fall into the latter category, but many of the roads blocked by debris and sand have yet to be inspected.

While the county said it will need millions of dollars to replace sand lost to Nicole, talks have already begun on what to do before future storms hit.
