‘Bonding time’: same firefighting shift on duty for Ian and Nicole, Thanksgiving

OVIEDO, Fla. — In life, the chips fall your way some of the time – and other ways the rest.

Lately, one firefighting shift in Oviedo has experienced the same result again and again.

The same group of nine firefighters was on duty for Hurricane Ian, Hurricane Nicole and Thanksgiving.

“There is a lot more bonding time,” Battalion Chief Tom Algeri said.

For Thanksgiving, spirits were high. Every member of the shift was responsible for a different dish – be it the turkey, potatoes, stuffing or many dessert options.

“Although we’re here to respond, we’d like to not have to because that means something bad is happening,” Algeri said.

The group is scheduled for Christmas Eve, but will have Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day off.
